Taiwan’s Ministry dictionary in 2024 glosses 緲 as “slight” and notes it is absent from 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary. 糸 is the silk element; 眇 supplies the sound. Around 290, poet Mu Hua used 縹眇 for distant, indistinct immortals in 海賦 (“Sea Rhapsody”). Later literary usage of 縹緲 also describes long, clear sound and things drifting on water or in wind.
