What 縵 means
It began as a textile word for cloth with no pattern. In classical Chinese, 縵 moves from plain silk to anything undecorated, even a plain carriage. Sent by itself, it is a lexical fragment: ask what phrase it came from rather than reading feeling into it.
Where did 縵 come from?
It grew from material vocabulary, not a one-off invention. The earliest evidence found for this exact form is its entry in 說文解字; its phonetic 曼 is older, attested on late-Shang and Western-Zhou bronze inscriptions. The job was practical: label plain silk, including ordinary clothing, before the sense widened to unadorned things. Japanese dictionaries keep extra loose/slow and ensemble senses, plus a separate かげ reading for a citrus-branch bundle in the Kojiki (712).
Literary and reference-like; a bare 縵 looks deliberate, not conversational.
For a curtain, use 幔; 縵 points first to plain silk.
