It means to wind around. As of 2026, the oldest known gloss is “to wind around,” in the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary. 糸 means thread; 尞 supplies sound. Records also use 繚 for walls, ritual, and sewing; 繚亂 extends winding to confusion.
