What 繳 means
In Mandarin, it means “hand in,” “pay,” or “surrender.”
In 繳費, Mandarin pinyin, a roman-letter sound guide, spells it jiǎo, roughly “jyao” with a low-dipping tone.
The earliest recorded example is 弓繳 in 告子上, a chapter of the Mencius. It names a silk cord on a bird-hunting arrow, used to recover the arrow or prey. The zhuó reading occurs here, roughly “jwo” with a rising tone. Japanese also records senses such as “return,” “hand over,” “pay taxes,” and “cling,” alongside the arrow tool.

1Why does 繳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
