What 绀 means
Deep blue with a red or purple cast.
The Analects, an early Chinese sayings collection, mentions 紺 in a dress rule. The Shuowen Jiezi dictionary, submitted in 121 CE, defines it as deep-blue silk tinged red. A third-century Wei record lists 紺青 and 紺地 brocade as gifts to Himiko, ruler of Japan.
Modern Chinese uses 绀 for blue-black or blue-purple shades. Japanese 紺 came to mean deep navy; a 10th-century literary example and commercial 紺染 evidence from 1349 mark that use.

1Why does 绀 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
