What 练 means
An older form of the character described silk processing.
Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, records 練 in small-seal script, an older formal writing style, for silk boiled and scoured to soften and whiten it. In 練, 糹 signals silk and 柬 gives a sound clue.
That textile sense connects with later meanings of refinement and practice. Traditional Chinese writes this same character as 練; 练 is its simplified form.
Neutral, everyday language for working on a skill.
For skill practice, use 练; 炼 means refining, though 锻炼 is the established word for physical exercise.

1Why does 练 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
