What 经 means
The whole word determines its meaning. 经, written jing or jīng in pronunciation searches, occurs in words about passage, experience, management, and classic or sacred texts.
The character has a weaving history. An ancestral form appears in bronze inscriptions from the Late Western Zhou (about 800 BCE), long before the modern simplified shape. Its early meaning was the warp: threads running lengthwise through cloth, contrasted with 纬, the crosswise weft.
Later meanings include longitude, passing through, management, and authoritative texts. Japanese 経済, meaning “economy,” was shortened from 経世済民, an expression about governing and supporting the people. It acquired its modern economic sense during the Meiji period. That history belongs to the word, rather than making 经 alone mean “economy.”
Should I use 经, 經, or 経?
Match the language and writing system of your text. 经 belongs to simplified Chinese, 經 to traditional Chinese, and 経 is the usual Japanese form. Changing fonts does not convert one character into another.
Japanese 経 has Japanese readings, including ケイ, キョウ, and へる. The first two are used in compounds; the last is a verb reading meaning “pass through” or “undergo.” The word determines the reading.
How do I read 经 in a message?
Translate the complete word, then read the sentence. In 已经吃饭了, 已经 supplies “already.” If someone sends only 经, ask for the surrounding text before choosing a translation.
经文 refers to religious texts; 经过 and 经验 belong to everyday vocabulary.
Do not translate 经 alone as “sutra”; the surrounding word decides.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 经 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
