统 can contribute ideas of joining, leading, managing, or continuing a line; the surrounding word decides which fits. For example, 统计 means “statistics” or “to count,” not “unified planning.” Translate compounds as whole words instead of giving 统 one fixed gloss.

统 and 統 are simplified and traditional written forms with the same core meanings, but they are separate characters in digital text. A font change alone will not convert one into the other.

What connects 統 with silk?

In the Han period, the dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records the small-seal form of 統, an older script style, and defines it as 紀, an organizing thread. Its commentary connects this sense with drawing silk from a cocoon. This is an early written witness, not proof of when the form first appeared.

統 is built from 糹, the thread-and-silk component, and 充, a sound component. 统 keeps 充 and simplifies the left component to 纟. Meanings broadened from thread or a connected line to succession, governing, and bringing things into order.
