What 绢 means
It names a thin, tough silk fabric.
A form appears on bamboo writing strips from Chu, an ancient Chinese state, during the Warring States period, an early era in Chinese history. Across Chinese history, silk served for clothing, writing, painting, banners, gifts, and payment. In China, embroidered silk robes marked rank; Korean rules restricted who could wear silk.
帛 is a broader term for silk textiles. 绢本 means a painting or calligraphy on silk; 手绢 means a handkerchief; 绢花 means a fabric flower.
