What 罝 means
A rabbit-catching net, later used more broadly for other hunting nets.
In 《兔罝》, hunters stretch close-woven netting across a path or through the woods. Classical dictionaries also use 罝 for nets that catch birds or animals, and for catching them with nets.
A 2012 study of ancient writing proposes that a Shang dynasty oracle-bone graph—a net and rabbit carved on bone or shell used in divination—is an ancestor of 罝. It also points to related forms on inscribed bamboo strips from the ancient state of Chu; those identifications are scholarly interpretations, not certainties. The Shuowen dictionary records 𦋽 and 𦋾 as variant forms.
What does 兔罝 mean in the poem?
The poem uses a hunting scene to praise a warrior.
《兔罝》 shows hunters setting nets, then praises a warrior as his lord's shield, ally, and confidant. Traditional commentary reads the scene as the moral influence of a ruler's household; another interpretation sees direct praise of capable warriors.
Archaic and literary; it fits a classical quotation or a deliberate allusion.
Without context, readers may take 罝 literally as a net rather than as a literary allusion.

1Why does 罝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
