What 羬 means
It is an old animal name. The Erya, an early Chinese glossary compiled between the Warring States period, when rival Chinese states fought, and early Western Han, glosses 羬 as a sheep.
In the Shanhaijing, a classical collection about lands and creatures, 羬羊 is a sheep-like being with a horse’s tail; its story says the creature’s fat healed chapped skin. 羊 signals the animal sense in 羬, while 麙 is a recorded variant form.

Questions people ask
1Why does 羬 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
