What 翀 means

It means to fly straight upward.

As of 2026, its earliest known written entry is in the Yupian, a Chinese character dictionary compiled during the Liang dynasty; it glosses 翀 as “fly to heaven.” The earlier Shuowen Jiezi, another Chinese character dictionary, does not list it.

Later Chinese poems use 翀 for skyward ascent: a swan rises in one poem, and Tang poet Wang Wei uses it for a prince’s flight to heaven.
