What 翦 means
It means “cut,” “trim,” or “remove.” Shuowen Jiezi, an old Chinese character dictionary, describes evenly trimmed feathers; a commentary says shortening arrow feathers shifted an arrow’s balance forward.
Is 翦 the same as 剪?
They are related forms; 剪 is the everyday one. 翦 appears in formal compounds such as 翦灭 (“wipe out”) and as a surname, as in 翦伯赞.
Rare and literary; found in formal compounds and surnames.
For ordinary cutting, 剪 is the usual choice.
