What 翪 means

翪 names a bird’s repeated up-and-down wingbeats. It describes the motion, not a bird species.

The Erya, an early Chinese glossary, includes 翪 in a gloss about birds. Shuowen Jiezi, an early character dictionary, omits it; later rhyme dictionaries retain the wing-motion sense. Two documented variant forms are 𦑨 and 𪃊.

As of 2026-09-11, a Shanghainese dictionary example uses 翪 for the same wing motion.

A specialized literary Chinese verb for a bird’s wing motion.
