What 翳 means
翳 means screen or shade, and can name eye opacity.
A bronze from the early Chinese Western Zhou, around 1000 BCE, shows a feathered canopy. The later mythic Classic of Mountains and Seas depicts Xiahou Qi holding 翳 in the Nine Generations dance.
It also extends to concealment and dimness. 羽 marks feathers; 殹 supplies sound; 瞖 is an alternative form. Japanese literary readings are かげ (shade) and かすみ (dim vision).
Compounds set the register: literary cover imagery or a medical term for clouded sight.

Questions people ask
1Why does 翳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
