What 聏 means
It means “harmonize,” “hairy,” or, as a variant, “ashamed.”
In the received Zhuangzi, an ancient Chinese philosophical text, 聏 appears in 以聏合驩 and means bringing things into harmony. As of 2026, the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, has no entry for 聏. The Longkan Shoujian, a dictionary that helped Buddhist readers understand written texts, records it in 997. That date tells us when the dictionary records it, not when the character began.
Someone sent me 聏—what does it mean?
Read the surrounding text before assigning a sense.
The meanings come from classical writing and dictionaries. A sender may be quoting the Zhuangzi or discussing the character; ask for the sentence or source before choosing a gloss.
Its documented material is classical writing and dictionary entries.
A bare 聏 does not identify which dictionary sense the sender intends.
