What 肧 means
肧 refers to an embryo or the start of development.
In Mandarin, 肧 and 胚 are both read as pēi, roughly like “pay” with a small puff of air on the p and a high, level tone.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 肧 as the first month of pregnancy and pairs it with 胎 for the third.
Later senses of 胚 cover the beginning of an undertaking or something only partly formed.
In modern Chinese, 肧 is an uncommon historical spelling.
Use 胚 in ordinary writing; 肧 can look like a typo.
