What 胍 means
In chemistry it names guanidine; older texts use it for bodily bulk.
Chinese characters can combine a meaning part with a sound part: ⺼ points to the body, while 瓜 supplies the sound here. 胍 appears in later dictionaries including 《玉篇》, 《廣韻》, 《集韻》 and 《類篇》. The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s 2024 entry says it is absent from 《說文》, an earlier Chinese dictionary.
In chemistry, 胍 appears in names such as 二甲雙胍 (metformin) and 硝酸胍 (guanidine nitrate). Mandarin reads the chemical sense guā (approximately “gwah,” high and level); older dictionary readings include gū (“goo,” high and level) and hù (“hoo,” falling, with a rougher h).
A technical term in chemistry; literary or dictionary use for the older bodily senses.
Alone, 胍 does not tell you whether the chemical or older bodily sense is intended.

1Why does 胍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
