What 胜 means

胜 means winning or coming out ahead. A contest compound names the result: 胜利 is “victory,” while 胜负 leaves winning or losing open.

How is 胜 related to 勝?

胜 is the simplified Chinese form corresponding to 勝. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 勝 as “to bear or undertake”: 力 supplies the meaning clue, while 朕 hints at its sound.

Classical Chinese also used it for defeating or surpassing. A bronze inscription of 勝 dates to the Warring States period, an early attestation rather than proof of the first form.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 胜 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
