Chinese character 胵

胵 means a bird’s gizzard and, more broadly, animals’ inner organs; Mandarin reads it chī, roughly “chee” with a high, level tone. The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese-character dictionary, records both senses. A 2024 character-variant dictionary also lists 膍胵 and Cantonese 芙胵 for poultry offal.

What 胵 means

It names a bird’s stomach, with a wider sense for animal organs.

The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi explains the parts: 肉 marks flesh or the body, and 至 supplies the sound.

Specialized and classical; outside anatomy or food wording, it reads as deliberately learned.

A lone 胵 does not identify the intended sense; surrounding words decide.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 胵 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
