What 臫 means
It means to act with self-respect and restraint.
As of 2026-09-09, the Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, has no entry for 臫. A later dictionary traces the gloss “自重之也” (“act with self-respect”) to 篇海 (Pianhai), another Chinese dictionary. Its Four-Sound Pianhai compilation dates to 1208; that dates a reference, not 臫’s creation.
A Japanese kanji reference also gives the Japanese reading tsutsushimu, pronounced approximately tsu-tsu-shi-mu. It is a verb for restraining yourself or acting carefully.
Can I send 臫 by itself?
Use it to discuss the character, not as a reaction.
No established messaging meaning for 臫 is documented as of 2026-09-09. Sent alone, it is more likely to look like a character sample or quotation than a clear request for self-restraint. If you mean “show self-respect,” say so in ordinary words.
Chinese character dictionaries index 臫 under 自, the indexing component called a radical; one analysis splits its form into 自 plus 乚. That is a structural link, not proof that one character descended from the other.
It belongs in a dictionary or character discussion; alone in casual chat, it looks like a test or quotation.
Do not send it alone expecting someone to infer “show self-respect.”

1Why does 臫 show as a box or look different?
A missing-glyph box means the selected font does not contain 臫. As of 2026-10-08, a fallback font may also draw Han characters with regionally different strokes. That changes its appearance, not its identity.
