What 舓 means
It means using the tongue to take food.
Its earliest known written record is in the Eastern Han character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, compiled in 121 CE. The entry defines 舓 as taking food with the tongue. Its form pairs 舌 (“tongue”) with 易, which hints at the character’s sound.
The sense broadened to licking objects and even to a brush picking up ink. A 2024 Taiwanese character-variant dictionary lists 舓 as a variant of 舐 and gives 舐 as the regular form.
Historically marked and bookish; 舓 is a variant of 舐.
For ordinary writing, use 舐; 舓 can look like a typo.
