What 苇 means

苇 means “reed.”

A reed mat from the Chinese site of Tianluoshan dates to 6775–6645 calibrated years before 1950. Written forms appear in Warring States Chu slips (bamboo writing strips) and Qin/Han manuscript forms. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, calls 苇 “large 葭”: 葭 is an unflowered reed, 苇 the mature plant. An Eastern Han account describes New Year reed door cords with peach figures and tiger images for protection.

In modern Mandarin, bare 苇 has a bookish edge.

Can I use bare 苇? 芦苇 is more natural in ordinary Mandarin; alone, 苇 can sound bookish or incomplete.

Why does 苇 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
