What 苗 means

苗 means a seedling or young plant. In Chinese, its written parts combine grass above a field, an image of new growth in cultivated ground. Its meanings also extend to young animals, a first sign or beginning, and descendants.

A bronze inscription from the Western Zhou period shows an earlier form of 苗. The inscription is writing on a bronze object, and it records an earlier stage in the character’s evolving written form.

The people-name has a separate history. In early texts, 三苗 names southern groups, but its direct relationship to today’s Miao communities is disputed. That old label alone does not establish an unbroken ethnic identity.

Is 苗 the same as Hmong?

No; the names are not interchangeable in every context.

In contemporary Chinese usage, 苗族 is an established ethnic designation for the Miao people. Some Hmong diaspora audiences prefer Hmong. When referring to someone, use the name they use for themselves.

A lone 苗 does not settle which meaning is intended; ask for the whole word or sentence. Plant compounds, literary wording, and identity references point to different readings.

Neutral in plant compounds; use care when 苗族 labels a people.

Some Hmong diaspora audiences prefer Hmong; check a person’s own name before using 苗 as a label.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 苗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
