苬

苬 is an old Chinese name for a fungus called lingzhi. The phrase 苬芝 appears in an early Chinese dictionary; one scholar proposed that 苬 there may be a damaged copy of 菌, not a general alternate form of that character.

What 苬 means

苬 names a fungus identified with lingzhi.

The Erya, an early Chinese dictionary traditionally dated to around the 3rd century BCE, records 苬芝. Later dictionaries gloss 苬 as 木灵芝, literally “wood lingzhi.”

Is 苬 related to 菌?

Only in one proposed reading of an old passage.

During the Qing dynasty, the scholar Hao Yixing noted that another version of the Erya reads 菌芝 and suggested that a damaged copy turned 菌 into 苬. The proposal links the characters in that passage; it does not make them interchangeable in general.

A classical plant name; outside a historical reference, its lingzhi sense needs explanation.

苬 alone gives little clue that you mean lingzhi.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 苬 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
