The Shuowen Jiezi, a dictionary from China’s Eastern Han dynasty (an early imperial period; 121), explains 茱 through 茱萸: 艹 marks a plant, while 朱 supplies the sound. At China’s Double Ninth festival, people wore or tucked in 茱萸 to ward off evil. Japan’s Chōyō (重陽) festival is recorded by 685; later accounts mention pouches of 茱萸 as chrysanthemums (菊) gained prominence.
