What 蒢 means
蒢 appears in 黃蒢, an old plant name.
The early Chinese dictionary Erya pairs 蘵 and 黃蒢 in a plant gloss. The work is layered, and this gloss is associated with material around the 3rd century BCE; it is an early lexical record, not a known date when the character was invented. Its commentator Guo Pu describes leaves like 酸漿 (another plant), small white flowers with yellow centres, and says the plant was eaten pickled in Jiangdong, south of the lower Yangtze.
By the Eastern Han dynasty, the Shuowen Jiezi dictionary records 蒢 as 艹 plus 除: 艹 marks the plant category, while 除 hints at the sound. Later dictionaries preserve it in 菗蒢, a name for 地榆, another plant, and 蘧蒢, a coarse mat; one also records a dyeing use.
Historical and botanical in its dictionary uses, from an old plant name to a word for a coarse mat.
