What 蒻 means
An early record ties 蒻 to cattail and mat-making. Jijiu pian (急就篇), a Western Han primer dated 48–33 BCE, lists 蒲蒻 among household things.
Shuowen Jiezi (說文解字), an early character dictionary, defines 蒻 as soft cattail used for mats, formed with 艸 (plant) plus 弱 (sound). 蒻席 is a cattail mat; 蒻 can also mean a lotus stem under mud. 蒟蒻 names konjac and passed into Japanese as konnyaku, a food. Fonts can change its drawn style.
Literary alone; concrete in compounds.

1Why does 蒻 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
