What 蓓 means
蓓 means “flower bud,” chiefly in 蓓蕾. Longkan Shoujian, a Chinese guide to reading Buddhist scriptures compiled around 997, glosses 蓓蕾 as a flower about to open; the Chinese dictionary Jiyun says “beginning to flower.” Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, does not include 蓓.
A poem from the Tang period uses 蓓蕾 for white peony buds. The Chinese story collection Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (聊斋志异) uses it for garden buds. A 2024 lexical entry lists regional Chinese names for buds: 花骨朵兒, 花苞 and 花冧.
Written, literary and botanical.
Is 蓓 used by itself? It can feel clipped; 蓓蕾 is the full written word for a bud.

1Why does 蓓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
