What 蓸 means
A plant name, but no identifiable species.
The Han-dynasty dictionary Shuowen glosses it as a plant; the later Song-dynasty dictionary Guangyun calls it a plant name.
An early example is “四年咎奴蓸令戈”, a bronze inscription from the late Warring States period.
The top grass radical 艹 signals vegetation; 曹 supplies the sound.
Its clearest setting is historical records and dictionary entries.
