What 蔓 means
A climbing vine or tendril, and by extension, spreading growth.
野有蔓草 (“wild fields have spreading vines”) belongs to the pre-Qin textual tradition of the Book of Songs, an early collection of Chinese poems. Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled in 100–121 CE, glosses 蔓 as 葛属, a group of climbing plants. 艹 signals a plant; 曼 supplies the sound. Chinese 蔓延 extends the vine sense to spreading. Japanese つる (“tsu-ru”) means vine; 蔓延る is read はびこる (“ha-bi-ko-ru”), “to spread.”
A lone 蔓 may leave its language and intended reading unclear.
