What 薮 means
It names dense, overgrown plant growth. In Japanese, やぶ (yabu) refers to a thick patch of grass, shrubs, bamboo, or similar plants. 薮 is a recognized variant of 藪, the usual form in printed Japanese.
The early Japanese dictionary 新撰字鏡 records やぶ around 898–901. The word also appears in a poem in 古今和歌集, an early Japanese poetry collection, dated 905–914. Older Chinese usage of 藪 includes “marshland” and “wild country”; those are older written meanings, distinct from the everyday Japanese word やぶ.
Japanese compounds extend やぶ beyond literal plants: 藪医者 means an incompetent doctor, and 藪睨み refers to a squint. 薮蕎麦 is an established name for a shop selling Japanese buckwheat noodles.
How do you read 薮 in a surname?
Surname readings include やぶ and そう. For an English speaker, they sound roughly like “yah-boo” and “soh” with a long o. Japanese surname directories list family names containing 薮, including 薮内 and 薮田.
When addressing someone, use the reading they give you. Changing 薮 to 藪 in a name changes the family’s chosen written form, even though the two are related variants.
A marked Japanese variant: 藪 is usual in general print, while 薮 also appears in family names and some established shop names.
Do not change 薮 in someone's name without checking.
