What 藇 means
In classical Chinese, 藇 praises wine as fine or beautiful.
The ancient Classic of Poetry includes 釃酒有藇; a traditional gloss calls 藇 “beautiful.” The Classic of Mountains and Seas records 藷藇, an old yam name.
Dictionaries give 藇 the sense “lush growth,” also written 穥, and its yam-name sense as 蕷, as in 薯蕷. Mandarin’s letter spelling, pinyin, gives xù for wine and yù for yam: both have a falling tone and “ee” with rounded lips; xù starts like soft sh, yù like y.
