What 藗 means
It names the plant glossed as 牡茅. The Erya, an early Chinese reference work dated roughly to the 3rd–2nd centuries BCE, gives that gloss. The Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary submitted in 121 CE, analyzes 藗 as 艹, the plant-sign component, plus 遬, which hints at its sound. Classical accounts describe 茅 grass used to line and strain vessels for wine offerings in rituals.
