Han character 藝

It means cultivated skill, talent, or art. Its oldest recorded ancestor is 埶, shown in oracle-bone and bronze forms as a person planting a seedling. That gives 藝 its original practical sense: planting or growing. The meaning then widened to practiced ability, so 藝 can describe craft, talent, or artistic work.
