What 蘹 means
Both readings exist; the source matters. The dictionary 玉篇, compiled in 543, glosses 蘹 as a plant. A Chinese medicine text from China's Tang dynasty records 蘹香子 as fennel in 659.
Taiwan's 2021 education dictionary lists 蘹香 for both 茴香 (fennel) and 杜蘅, also called 杜衡, a different plant. A 2019 study traces the 杜衡 reading to a missing heading in a later copy of the incense book 香譜.
Bookish and botanical; found in plant names and Chinese medical writing.
Do not assume 蘹香 means fennel; some sources use it for 杜蘅.

Questions people ask
1Why does 蘹 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
