Chinese character 虦

虦 is an old name for a tiger with a pale coat, preserved in 虦貓. It appears in classical dictionaries; a gloss helps if the character turns up alone in chat.

What 虦 means

The old gloss describes a tiger with pale or scant fur.

The Erya, an early Chinese dictionary, says the legendary beast 狻猊 resembles a 虦貓 and eats tigers and leopards. The Erya tradition is placed at the Warring States–early Han transition. Shuowen, a later character dictionary, explains 貓 in this old expression as part of an animal name.

Can I send 虦 as a reaction?

As of 2026, it has no standard chat-reaction reading.

A bare message can leave the recipient guessing because 虦 is a classical dictionary word. If someone sends it, ask whether they mean the old tiger term.

Classical and lexicographic.

In 虦貓, 貓 belongs to the old animal name, not a household cat.
