What 蚡 means
It means mole or zokor, written as a variant of 鼢.
The earliest clear record is Shuowen Jiezi, a Han dynasty dictionary. It records 蚡 as the 虫+分 spelling beside 鼢 with 鼠+分: 分 gives the sound, the left part marks the category. As of 2026-09-08, the consulted databases show no secure earlier attestation.
Historical sources use it in 田蚡, 蚡冒, and 蚡泉: a Han official, a Chu ruler, and a Lu place. Japanese references retain it for mole. In a name, treat 蚡 as spelling, not as a clue about bugs.
