What 蚿 means
蚿 names a millipede in older Chinese. In 馬蚿, the full compound names the animal, with 馬 as its first character.
An early appearance is in the Zhuangzi, an ancient Chinese philosophical text: a one-legged creature envies 蚿's many legs, then 蚿 envies a snake. The Fangyan, an old book on regional words, links 馬蚿 with Northern Yan. Later Chinese references equate 馬蚿 with 馬陸 and list 百足, 馬軸, and 刀環 as other names for the animal. Taiwan's Ministry of Education character-variant dictionary notes in 2024 that 蚿 is absent from 說文, an early Chinese character dictionary.
Old zoological vocabulary; alone, 蚿 needs context.

1Why does 蚿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
