What 蛗 means
It appears chiefly in 蛗螽, an old grasshopper or locust term.
The Book of Songs, an early Chinese poetry collection, has the wording 趯趯阜螽; later dictionary tradition records the insect-radical spelling 蛗螽.
Older commentaries do not settle one modern species: the Erya, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses it with 蠜, while later notes range from grasshopper or locust to a young locust or regional name. Treat 蛗 as part of an old insect word, not a precise modern species label.
Why does 蛗 look different in old sources?
阜螽 is an older spelling of the same compound.
Chinese character dictionaries preserve other forms for the same character. The font behavior was checked on 2026-09-11: the code point stays fixed, but a font without coverage may show a substitute glyph or nothing.
How do I type 蛗?
Use Unicode input if your Chinese input method does not offer 蛗.
Mandarin pinyin, the spelling system for Mandarin, writes its pronunciation as fù—roughly “foo” with falling pitch. Searches for fù or fu4 compete with many same-syllable characters, so an input method may rank common candidates first. The platform shortcuts below were checked on 2026-09-11.
