What 蜨 means
In Chinese, 蜨 is another written form of 蝶 for “butterfly.”
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, defines 蜨 through 蛺蜨, a word for butterfly. In 蜨, 虫 points to the insect category and 疌 is the sound component.
Use 蝶 for ordinary Chinese writing.
The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s variant dictionary (2024) labels 蜨 a variant and 蝶 the customary form for butterfly.
The difference is chiefly spelling. Older words such as 蛺蜨 and 蝴蜨 use 蜨 where common writing uses 蝶.
What does 蜨 mean in a message?
Usually, it points to the butterfly word.
When someone sends 蜨 alone, read it as a rare butterfly spelling first. Consider the regional crab sense only when the surrounding message is about Zhangzhou–Quanzhou seafood.
Rare in Chinese writing; 蝶 is the customary form for butterfly.
Alone, 蜨 can be mistaken for a typo for 蝶.

1Why does 蜨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
