What 蜽 means
It names an uncanny spirit of mountains and streams. In 國語, a classical Chinese text, 蝄蜽 is grouped among spirits of wood and stone, distinct from named spirits of water and earth. The Han-period Chinese character dictionary 說文解字 glosses 蜽 as 蛧蜽 and analyzes it as 虫, the insect element, plus 兩, used for its sound.
蜽 and 魍魎: how are they related?
They belong to the same spirit-name family. 蜽 usually appears at the end of 蛧蜽 or 蝄蜽; dictionaries also connect those forms with 魍魎, while 罔兩 is another written form. On its own, 蜽 gives too little context to identify a sender’s mood; ask which word or passage they mean before assigning one.
Literary and lexicographic; by itself, it reads like a rare-word reference rather than a conversational reaction.
Alone, it does not reveal the sender’s intended mood.
