What 蝐 means
蝐 belongs inside an older name for the hawksbill turtle. The compound 蝳蝐 names the turtle or its shell; modern Chinese usually writes the name as 玳瑁.
The older spelling 瑇瑁 appears in Lu Jia’s book New Discourses, dated c. 197 BCE, an example of the name in a classical Chinese text. Japanese character references also record an ideographic variation sequence for 蝐: a selector that requests a particular glyph form, displayed only by fonts that support it.
Rare, chiefly dictionary and classical-text usage.
