What 蝞 means
A rare name for a shrimp-like aquatic creature.
In the Eastern Jin period, the writer Guo Pu included 蝞 among river and sea creatures in 《江赋》, a classical literary work about a river.
Later dictionary glosses describe it as living in a tortoise shell and being edible; one also links it with a pleasing complexion. An annotation to the same passage identifies 璅蛣 as a hermit crab, a separate creature label.
What should I make of 蝞 in a message?
Take the creature name literally; ask for context.
Chinese dictionaries give the Mandarin reading mèi, roughly like “may” with a falling tone. Japanese readings of 蝞 are listed as ビ (roughly “bee”) and ミ (roughly “mee”); the historical creature gloss remains.
By itself, 蝞 gives you a literal creature name, not the sender’s reason for choosing it. Ask for the surrounding sentence if you need to know what they meant.
Literary and lexicographic, with a classical edge; its citation and dictionary glosses make it a bookish choice in ordinary prose.
