What 蟲 means
It means “insect” in Traditional Chinese.
The character repeats 虫 three times as a collective form. An ancestor of 虫 appears as a snake drawing on oracle bones—animal bones and turtle shells used in divination—around 1200 BCE. Older Chinese could call a tiger 大蟲 (“large insect”) and a snake 長蟲 (“long insect”).
Traditional Chinese form; historical-looking in everyday Japanese.
For ordinary Japanese insect writing, use 虫; 蟲 can look archaic.
