Chinese character 蟼

14845/20992

蟼 is a rare character in old Chinese sources for a frog-like animal, not an emoji. Its dictionary glosses link it with 蟆 and 蛙, and one note describes a broad-bellied, short-legged toad. If it arrives alone in chat, its purpose is unclear; ask the sender for context.

What 蟼 means

It is an old Chinese term for a frog-like animal.

The Erya, an early Chinese dictionary, pairs 蟼 with 蟆 in a terse gloss. A note in the Jijiupian, a primer for learning Chinese characters, describes 蟼 as a name for 蝦蟆 with a broad belly and short legs (a frog or toad).

A Ministry of Education reference entry from 2024 says 蟼 is absent from Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, and records later dictionary entries in Longkan Shoujing, Yupian, Guangyun, and Jiyun. Together, these texts preserve a trail of dictionary glosses for the animal term.

Why are 蟼, 蟆, and 蛙 linked?

Their link is lexical: dictionaries use them to explain the animal.

The Erya pairs 蟼 with 蟆, while commentary uses frog terms such as 蛙 to explain it. This links the characters through old glosses; it does not show that 蟼 can replace either one in ordinary writing.

蟼蟆 is the clearest preserved compound. Here 蟆 helps explain a historical frog-or-toad term, not an alternate shape of 蟼.

What should I do if someone sends 蟼?

Ask what the sender meant before deciding how to reply.

With no surrounding sentence, 蟼 gives little clue to the sender's purpose. It could be quoted text, a character lookup, or an input test; the amphibian gloss alone does not set a chat tone.

Treating it as a frog reaction may turn an old written term into the wrong reply.

Classical-dictionary register: it reads like an old written term or character lookup, not casual reaction slang.

A frog gloss does not make a lone message a frog reaction.

Questions people ask

3

Is 蟼 an emoji?

No. 蟼 is a text character whose shape comes from the font available on the device.

Why does 蟼 show as a square?

A square is a missing-glyph box: the active font and fallback fonts may not contain 蟼. It marks a display gap, not a different character.

Can I send 蟼 by itself?

You can, but alone it does not say whether it is a quotation, lookup, or input test. Ask what the sender meant before deciding how to reply.
