袥

袥 is an old Chinese term for a skirt’s central slit. Dictionaries also give it a broader meaning linked to 拓.

What 袥 means

It names an opening in clothing. The earliest attestation is in the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary presented in 121 CE. It glosses 袥 with 衸, another clothing term, but does not say when or why 袥 was coined.

Dictionaries also record “stretch a garment” and “open out, expand.” 拓 carries this broader sense, not 袥’s clothing meanings.
