What 袺 means
It names holding picked plants in a raised garment. In 《诗经·周南·芣苢》, a plant-gathering song in the Shijing (Classic of Poetry), gatherers raise a garment's front edge to hold what they pick. Shijing poems are dated 1000–600 BCE, and bamboo manuscripts preserve versions of the collection from at least the fourth century BCE. The early Chinese dictionary 《说文解字》 describes the action as “执衽,” holding the garment front.
In Mandarin, its Pinyin reading jié is roughly “jyeh” with a rising tone. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts may draw this encoded character with different regional shapes; the drawing changes, not which character it is.
Classical and literary; it suits a quotation or a deliberate archaic effect.
In casual chat, its archaic tone can obscure the intended gesture.
