裉

cjk unified ideograph-88c9

CJK Unified Ideograph-88C9

裉 (kèn) names the seam under a garment's armhole, where clothing pieces meet near the armpit. The 2021 dictionary record shows its tailoring use: terms cover measuring or closing that join. The 2017 dialect record adds a regional twist: Harbin uses 裉 for a key point, while Jinan and Mouping keep the garment sense.

What 裉 means

No single inventor is documented. As of 2024, the Taiwan Ministry's variant dictionary says 說文 does not record 裉 and cites a chapter 49 passage of Dream of the Red Chamber using 窄裉.

The 2024 dictionary's compounds show why the word exists: name the armhole join so a maker can close it or measure from shoulder to armpit. The sources found do not establish a first occurrence.

Why does 裉 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
