What 褰 means
It means “lift clothing,” especially a skirt or robe.
《褰裳》 (“Lift the Skirt”), a pre-Qin poem (before the Qin dynasty) in the Book of Odes, an early Chinese poetry collection, shows someone lifting clothes to cross a river. The Zuo Commentary and Shuowen Jiezi dictionary also record an older noun sense: trousers.
褰裳 vs 褰帷: what changes?
The object tells you what is lifted.
裳 makes it clothing; 帷, a curtain. With clouds or mist, 褰 means “open” or “disperse.”
A preface to the Book of Odes reads the poem politically; since Zhu Xi, a Confucian scholar, it has also been read as teasing courtship.
Literary; a plain verb fits everyday speech.

1Why does 褰 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
